Community Projects: SOL Foundation

Roatan Charities

As our business grows, we at Liquid Systems want to participate in helping our community as much as we can.  There are many different charities and good causes in Roatan, almost too many to list.  These cover all types of things from clinics and medical, disability and rehabilitation, education-related charities, Rotary Club, veterinary, HIV/AIDS transmission, mission-based projects, youth, sports and many more.

Sol Foundation Roatan

Liquid Systems is proud to be a supporter of SOL Charity’s “Happy Tummies Active Minds” projects.  Based in Sandy Bay, this is a youth charity with many different areas.  This particular program focuses on providing meals for local school children (who might otherwise be going to school hungry) and teaching young people cooking skills and the importance of healthy, balanced diets.

Workers, in our experience, who are properly fed are much happier and more productive than those who are not.  The younger these habits are started, the better – which is where SOL Foundation comes in – any of whom could become an addition to our future expanded workforce.

Liquid Systems

At Liquid Systems we are always improving our kitchen facilities, with access to cold water at all times and safe storage for food.  We are working on expanding our home compost project to work, and reducing our garbage output by encouraging more sustainable food/eating practices, and expanding storage areas for employee plates, containers and cutlery.

We also cultivate our own okra, yucca, sugar cane, tomatoes, the beginnings of banana, plantain and papaya…working on more!  All organically fertilised with compost-enriched soil.  Check out our back yard!

What do we do at Liquid Systems?

Services in Roatan

As in many other places, Roatan and the Bay Islands more specifically, there are many people offering handy-man and different types of repair services.  These include, but are not limited to:

  • General plumbing
  • General electrical
  • Appliance repair
  • Tool repair
  • Appliance installation
  • A/C servicing and repair
  • Refrigeration servicing and repair
  • Small engine repair (gasoline and diesel)
  • Interior carpentry or drywall
  • Painting (interior and exterior)
  • Car and motorcycle repair
  • High-Voltage Electrical
  • Solar Panels

These services are abundant, variable in quality and legality.  Some are legal businesses specialising in one or more of these areas offering good service, others are perhaps less qualified individuals trying to make a living.

This can be a problem when it comes to accountability.  The work may not be done correctly.  Compliant invoices may not be available for your business expenses.  There may not offer any kind of guarantee.  You may be charged for work, and be left without a solution.

At Liquid Systems, these are all things we avoid to provide the best possible customer service.

What do we do at Liquid Systems?

At Liquid Systems, we stay specialized in our area of expertise.  We will not take on work that we do not have the absolute expertise or tools to carry out.  Our preference is to provide a reference for another business or individual who is able to carry out that specialized work.

Liquid Systems is a legal business with the correct paperwork to be able to work for your business.  We offer a 90 guarantee on repairs (where applicable), and are transparent and accountable throughout the installation and repair process, with photos, videos and availability over the phone, email and WhatsApp (very useful to send videos in the middle of repairs).

Liquid Systems repairs, services and installs:

  • Pumps – all sizes and types
  • Electric motors – single phase and three phase all sizes, including rewind
  • Hydraulic equipment: pumps, rams, controls and systems
  • Coupling alignment
  • Steel fabrication – welding and oxygen/acetylene cutting
  • Compressors – shop and ship compressors and their motors (dive compressors are referred elsewhere)
  • Marine PTOs and Controls (hydraulic and pneumatic)

The applications include:

  • Marine
  • Residential
  • Commercial
  • Municipal
  • Industrial

Pump running all the time? Maybe your pressure tank…

Pump running all the time

Is your pump running all the time?  Does it come on whenever any water at all is used?  Is your pump running driving up your RECO bill?  The problem may not be your pump, but your pressure tank.

Your pressure tank is an integral part of your system – it allows the pump to cycle on and off at appropriate intervals, providing pressure to your home or business.  When your pressure tank and pump are working together properly:

  • The pump should build pressure against water usage, and shut off
  • No noticeable drops in pressure during water usage
  • Good pressure at all points (low and high)
  • The pump should not run when water is not being used
  • The pump should not run continuously when water is being used

Pressure Tank Problems

Even if your pump is working 100%, it cannot give you the best efficiency without a properly working pressure tank.

Most common problems:

  • Broken air “bladder”
  • Incorrect air pressure (low or high) compared to the pump cut on/off pressure
  • Under-sized tank for building height or heavy water usage

Community Well Pump: Colonia Balfate, Sandy Bay

Community Well Pumps

Over a year ago, we were contacted by a charity who administrated and supplied equipment for one of the lower-income communities in Sandy Bay, Colonia Policarpo-Galindo.  Their community well pump problem had been solved, but at a great unnecessary cost to the charity.  They were told to replace the pump at great cost to themselves – it turned out the problem had been wrongly diagnosed and it should have been a small part and labor cost.  Liquid Systems advised them on how to address future problems, and we make ourselves available for consultation or help.

Colonia Balfate

A friend and customer of Liquid Systems who had just finished construction of Just Float, in Sandy Bay alerted us to a potential problem in the other Colonia in Sandy Bay.  Some of their workers had been without water for 3 days, and they were in the process of trying to pull out the well pump.

After speaking with a representative from their water association, the pump, cable, and controllers were taken to Liquid Systems to diagnose the problem.  Between the cable, pump and control box, they were looking at a value of around $7,500 for all their equipment.

Liquid Systems diagnosed the problem, obtained the part and returned the pump, cable and control box in working condition.  Every part was inspected and tested to make sure the problem would not recur.  The system was returned to Colonia Balfate within 2 days, and their water service restored.  All for 0.04% of the cost of new.

Shallow well jet pump systems problems: cavitation

What is a shallow well jet pump?

Your shallow well jet pump is the pump that moves water from your water source (“shallow well”, cistern or holding tank).  Each pump has a certain size for suction and discharge piping.  In this post we will look at the problem of cavitation and how to avoid it.

Suction pipe size and cavitation

For the most commonly found pumps in Roatan, it’s usually 1 1/4″ x 1″ or 1″x1″.  This means that the piping from the water source should be that size from the water source all the way to the pump (suction side).

img_4333

Some cisterns or designed systems will have a much smaller outlet – it can be as small as 1/2″.  If you have 1/2″ pipe all the way from the water source, and then stepped up to 1 1/4″ just before the pump, this causes cavitation.

What is cavitation? And how to prevent it.

Cavitation happens when the pump is starved of water.  This means there is not enough water going to the pump, though it requires a certain amount to work effectively.  This mixes air with the water, which causes damage to the inside of the pump, causing the pump parts to wear out much faster than they should.  You would also likely notice air coming out when using water (especially larger volumes).

Get it set up right from the beginning or corrected after the fact. You will avoid these problems and get the most of your well-tuned system.  Liquid Systems is here to save you money – we want your equipment to last as long as possible!

How Liquid Systems Helped You: Saved by a Snap Ring

Sometimes it might not be obvious HOW Liquid Systems can actually help you or your business save money.  So here I will recount some of the Liquid Systems success stories:

Saved By A Snap Ring: community deep well pump

A customer brought a deep well pump to Liquid Systems.  This particular well pump was one of a few supplying a particular community in Roatan.

The owner of the pump had previously brought it to another place for repair.  This other place told them that parts were not available and nothing could be done for this pump, but maybe to bring it to Liquid Systems “as a last resort”.  Now just to be clear, the other place was not a dedicated pump repair center, but they would have taken on the repair regardless.  Liquid Systems provides free estimates, guaranteed repairs, and ever increasing inventory suited to meet your needs – including factory parts and generic parts.

At Liquid Systems we determined:

  • The electric motor was working AOK, the problem must have therefore been in the pump end.
  • Upon opening up the pump, we found each impeller and diffuser to be completely encrusted in “Roatan Red Clay”, which caused significant drag – the pump would not perform correctly with this extra material on its main “water moving parts”
  • The impellers were not turning correctly together inside the pump housing; the problem was a missing part – a “snap-ring” or retaining ring.  This is a generic part that Liquid Systems keeps in stock in a variety of sizes (metric and standard)

snap ring box snap rings

With the pump and motor combination retailing at several thousand $$, they got their deep well pump cleaned up, repaired and tested all for an unusually low 4% of the cost of new!  This included a FREE estimate – the customer decided to go ahead with the repair.

With our knowledge and our preparation – this community saved money…Maybe yours can too!

Liquid Systems and Community Projects

At Liquid Systems we are committed to serving our community and beyond as best we can.  Although we work for all size businesses and individual customers, we also assist as much as we can with community projects.

In Roatan these projects include: community well-water systems, charity projects and other often underfunded public services.

We have consulted with them in the past, and in the future we will be helping with a community well system serving Colonia Policarpo-Galindo in Sandy Bay (after they were forced to waste money on poor service with another business).  This well supplies water to thousands of homes, and will need maintenance and further improvements in future.

In the past, we have consulted with and carried out repairs for various community well projects in West End, Gibson Bight, Sandy Bay and Coxen Hole, Calabash Bight, Punta Blanca and various others – keeping costs as low as possible for the customer.  We offer free advice, low-cost repairs and new equipment suggestions where necessary.

Our most recent community project came together with the help of Keith Miller of Blue Wave Radio, Joe Peterkin and the Roatan Rotary Club, and the Cuerpo de Bomberos de Roatan (local fire dept.)  They had available some very important and useful hydraulic tools: Jaws of Life, spreaders and rams.  Liquid Systems was told that the equipment had not been functioning for some time.

We were able to get things back in service within less than 2 weeks – essential equipment for cutting someone out of a car wreck (and there is only one such set up covering the whole island of Roatan).

Once again, thanks to Blue Wave Radio, the Rotary Club of Roatan and the Cuerpo de Bomberos de Roatan, we are here to make Roatan a better and safer place!

Bearings, Pullers and Presses

Bearings/Balineras

Rotating equipment typically has bearings in its construction.  Changing the bearings when they are worn, can prevent more catastrophic failures such as burned motors, which keeps your repair/maintenance cost lower.

At Liquid Systems we carry a selection of common bearings of various sizes at competitive prices. We can also order custom bearings or unusual sizes.  For the commonly used ball bearings, we try as much as possible to get double shielded (metal), for longer durability in heavy use conditions.

double shielded ball bearing

There is definitely a RIGHT way and a WRONG way to install or remove bearings.

The difference between us and other places is that Liquid Systems has the RIGHT TOOLS.  With our years’ experience operating these tools, we can remove and replace bearings without damaging your equipment, or your new bearing.

For example: a new bearing should absolutely NOT be beaten onto the shaft.  If you don’t have a bearing press, there isn’t really another great way to do that.

Pullers

We have a 10-ton straight jaw puller, and a hammer slide puller to help us with the removals.
